Heating problems we sort out

  • Radiators cold at the top, the bottom, or completely
  • Heating on downstairs but not upstairs
  • System losing pressure or needing constant topping up
  • Noisy pipes, banging and kettling
  • Failed circulation pumps
  • Sticking or seized motorised valves
  • Thermostat, timer and control faults
  • Leaking radiators, valves and pipework
  • New radiators fitted, replaced or repositioned

We diagnose before we replace

It is easy to fit a new pump or valve and hope for the best. We would rather test the system, work out what is actually failing, and fix that. It costs you less and the repair lasts.

Once the fault is sorted we balance the radiators so the heat is spread evenly through the house, which is a step that often gets skipped and makes a real difference to how warm the rooms feel.

Sludge, filters and system health

Most heating problems in older Cardiff properties come down to sludge — a black iron oxide build-up that settles in radiators and blocks pipes and pumps. It makes the boiler work harder, so you pay more for less heat.

Where it is needed we flush the system and fit a magnetic filter with the correct inhibitor, so the system stays clean rather than silting up again within a couple of years.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is one radiator cold when the rest are hot?

Usually trapped air at the top, sludge at the bottom, or a valve that is not opening. If the top is cold and the bottom warm it is normally air; if the bottom is cold it is usually a build-up of sludge that needs flushing.

Why does my heating keep losing pressure?

There is almost always a small leak on the system, a failed pressure relief valve or a tired expansion vessel. Repeatedly topping it up hides the problem, so we trace the actual cause.

Can you add or move a radiator?

Yes. We fit new radiators, replace old ones and move them to work better with your room layout, then rebalance the system afterwards.

What is a power flush and do I need one?

It is a deep clean of the system to shift the sludge that stops radiators heating properly. It is worth doing when radiators are cold at the bottom, the water runs black when you bleed them, or the boiler is short cycling. We will tell you if we think it is genuinely needed.

Do you fit smart thermostats?

We fit and repair heating controls, including thermostats and timers. Tell us what you have or what you would like and we will advise on what works with your system.
